In 1916, Blok was elected as professor of Russian literature at Petrograd University, where he taught until his death in 1921. He lectured on the history of Russian literature from the 18th century to the 20th century, and also on the works of Pushkin, Gogol, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy. He was a popular lecturer, and his lectures were often attended by large crowds.
