Alexander Mackenzie completed the first crossing of North America from west to east. He began his journey in 1789 from the mouth of the Peace River in what is now northern British Columbia, Canada. He traveled through the Rocky Mountains and down the Mackenzie River to the Arctic Ocean. His journey was a major accomplishment and helped to open up the region to exploration and settlement.
