During World War II, the Soviet fighter ace Aleksandr Pokryshkin flew the Bell P-39 Airacobra on combat missions against the Luftwaffe. He is credited with destroying a majority of the 59 aircraft he claimed to have shot down in the P-39. Pokryshkin was also credited with 45 ground kills. He was one of the most successful Soviet fighter pilots in the war.
