Alexander Prokhorov was a Soviet physicist who is principally known for his research on lasers and masers. He shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1964 with Nikolai Basov and Charles Townes for their work on the development of the maser. Prokhorov also worked on the development of lasers, and he was the first person to observe stimulated emission of radiation in a gas.
