Answer
After a series of victories in the Russo-Turkish War, Alexander Suvorov led the Russian army to capture the strategically important fortress of Izmail on the Danube in 1790. This victory, which resulted in the deaths of over 24,000 Ottoman troops and the surrender of 35,000 more, made Suvorov a national hero in Russia and earned him the title of Count of the Russian Empire.
