The Zhenotdel, or Women's Department, was founded in 1919 as a part of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Its goal was to promote women's rights and to encourage women to participate in the Communist Party and in the Soviet government. The Zhenotdel was also responsible for organizing women's work in the Soviet economy.
