African. Alexandre Dumas' mother, Marie-Cessette Dumas, was born in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) in 1769. Her father was a French nobleman, Antoine Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie, and her mother was a slave of African descent. Marie-Cessette was freed from slavery in 1777 and moved to France with her father. She married Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, a general in the French army, in 1792.
