Alexandru Tzigara-Samurcaș's uncle, Marcu Berza, was a famous folklorist. Berza was born in 1871 in Sighet, Austro-Hungarian Empire (present-day Sighetu Marmației, Romania). He studied at the University of Budapest, where he received a doctorate in Slavic languages and literature. Berza was a professor of Romanian literature at the University of Bucharest and a member of the Romanian Academy.
