Pope Urban II was the pontiff to whom Alexios I, the Byzantine emperor, appealed for assistance in 1095. Alexios sought aid from the West to combat the advancing Seljuk Turks, who had captured much of Anatolia. Urban's response was to launch the First Crusade, a military expedition that aimed to recover the Holy Land from Muslim control and provide support to the Byzantine Empire.
