Alexis de Tocqueville was a French political thinker and historian who famously traveled to the United States in 1831 to study democracy. He spent nine months traveling through the country and published his findings in his book Democracy in America. Tocqueville was impressed by the democratic institutions of the United States, but he also warned of the dangers of individualism and materialism.
