Alfonso Carlos did serve in the military. In 1887, he joined the Spanish army as a cadet. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1893, and to captain in 1895. He served in the Spanish-American War of 1898, and was wounded in action at the Battle of Manila Bay. He was promoted to major in 1899, and to lieutenant colonel in 1902. He retired from the army in 1905.
