In 1254, Alfonso X of Castile and León created an alliance with the Kingdom of England. This was done in order to counter the growing power of the French kingdom, which was a rival of both Castile and England. The alliance was cemented by the marriage of Alfonso's daughter, Eleanor, to King Edward I of England.
