Alfonso XII was 10 years old when his mother, Isabella II, was deposed from the throne in 1868. Isabella had ruled Spain since 1833, but she was unpopular with many of her subjects, who resented her foreign origins and her authoritarian style of rule. In 1868, a military coup d'état led by General Juan Prim overthrew Isabella and installed her son, Alfonso XII, as king.
