Alfred Wegener was the first to overwinter on the inland Greenland ice sheet. In 1906, he led an expedition of Greenland explorers, and in 1912, he and his assistant, Rasmus Villumsen, spent 13 months in the inland ice. Wegener's work on the ice sheet helped him to develop his theory of continental drift.
