Alfred Werner was an inorganic chemist. He is best known for his work on the structure of coordination complexes. In 1893, he proposed Theory of coordination compounds, which states that metal atoms in these compounds are surrounded by a number of molecules or ions called ligands. This theory has been widely accepted and is the basis for much of our understanding of inorganic chemistry today.
