Ali Hassan al-Majid, known as "Chemical Ali" for his role in the use of chemical weapons against Iraqi Kurds in 1988, was the chief of the Iraqi Intelligence Service from 1991 to 1996. He was also a member of the Ba'ath Party and a close confidant of Saddam Hussein. In 2006, he was convicted of genocide and sentenced to death by hanging.
