Allan Octavian Hume, an English-born British Indian administrator, writer and ornithologist, was known as "the Pope of Indian Ornithology". Hume was a co-founder of the Bombay Natural History Society in 1883 and was the first secretary of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science. He was also a member of the Council of India from 1885 to 1887.
