Preserving the uniqueness of the black cultural experience was the focus of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater under Ailey's direction. Ailey's mission was to "honor the spirit and struggles of the African-American people". He believed that dance was a way to express the emotions and experiences of the black community. The AAADT became known for its performances of traditional African-American dance styles, as well as for its innovative choreography.
