Alvin York was born on December 13, 1887 in Pall Mall, Tennessee. He was a farmer and a World War I soldier who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Battle of the Argonne Forest. He later became a Christian minister and toured the country speaking about his experiences.
