Ambrose was made Bishop of Milan in 374 AD, after the Arian usurper Emperor Valentinian II had exiled the incumbent Bishop Auxentius. The new Bishop was a prominent supporter of Nicene Christianity, and his election helped to strengthen the position of Nicene orthodoxy in the West.
