Andreas Ludwig Priwin, later known as André Previn, was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1929. His parents were Jewish, and the family fled Nazi Germany to the United States in 1938. Previn began playing the piano at an early age and went on to become a renowned pianist, conductor, and composer. He adopted the stage name André Previn in 1946.
