Andrew Huxley's biological contribution was understanding nerve impulses and muscle contraction. Huxley and Alan Hodgkin shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work on the nerve impulse. They used a voltage clamp to measure the electrical activity of a single nerve fiber and were able to show that nerve impulses are caused by the flow of sodium ions across the cell membrane.
