Originally born in Odessa, Ukraine, which is part of the Russian empire, he grew up speaking Polish and identified as Polish. Although his parents worked for the Tsar's secret police, he joined the Bolshevik party and later rose to prominence in the Soviet government, becoming a leading prosecutor in Stalin's Great Purge.
