Andronikos I Komnenos was the first emperor of the Byzantine Empire to marry his cousin, Maria of Antioch. Maria was the daughter of the Seljuk Sultan Kilij Arslan II and the Byzantine princess Maria Komnene. The marriage was arranged by Andronikos's father, Emperor John II Komnenos, in order to cement an alliance between the Byzantine Empire and the Seljuk Sultanate.
