Anna Hazare, a social activist from India, started a hunger strike on 5 April 2011 to enact stringent anti-corruption law. He believed that the existing laws against corruption were not effective and that new laws were needed to punish corrupt officials. He also wanted the government to set up a Lokpal, or ombudsman, to investigate corruption cases.
