Anna Stepanovna Politkovskaya was a Russian journalist and writer. She was a staunch critic of the government of Vladimir Putin, and was assassinated in October 2006. Politkovskaya's work focused on human rights abuses in Chechnya, and she was awarded numerous awards for her journalism, including the Golden Pen of Freedom and the International Women's Media Foundation's Courage in Journalism Award.
