British national Annie Besant was a prominent figure in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She was a social reformer, theosophist, and women's rights activist. Besant was born in London, England, in 1847. She became involved in social reform and women's rights in the 1870s. In 1889, she joined Theosophical Society, a spiritual organization founded by Helena Blavatsky.
