St. Anthony was inspired to join the Franciscan Order by St. Francis of Assisi. Anthony had been a priest in the secular clergy before he met Francis, and was attracted to the simplicity and poverty of Francis's followers. He joined the order in 1221, and was ordained a priest in 1222. Anthony preached extensively throughout Italy, and his preaching was often accompanied by miracles.
