Antinous was born in the Roman province of Bithynia et Pontus, which was located in what is now modern-day Turkey. He was a young man of great beauty, and when he was discovered by Hadrian, the Roman emperor, he was immediately taken into his service. Antinous became Hadrian's favorite companion and confidant, and he accompanied the emperor on his travels throughout the empire.
