Antinous was introduced to Hadrian in 123 AD. He was an Egyptian youth from Bithynium. He was handsome and graceful, and Hadrian was immediately smitten with him. Antinous accompanied Hadrian on his travels and became a favorite of the emperor. He was made a priest of the cult of Dionysus and was eventually deified after his death.
