Antoninus Pius died on March 7, 161 AD, at the age of 75, from illness. He had been suffering from fever and chills for some time, and he died at his villa in Lorium, near Rome. He was succeeded by his adoptive son, Marcus Aurelius, who ruled for the next 19 years.
