Stradivari's craftsmanship was not exclusively self-taught. He was apprenticed to Nicolò Amati, the most renowned violin maker in Italy at the time, and he learned from Amati's techniques and designs. Stradivari also learned from other makers in the Cremona school of violin making, and he eventually developed his own unique style.
