Nixon's decision to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox was a key turning point in the Watergate scandal and led to his impeachment. Cox had been appointed by Attorney General Elliot Richardson to investigate the Watergate break-in and other potential abuses of power by the Nixon administration. When Richardson refused to fire Cox, Nixon ordered his deputy, William Ruckelshaus, to do so. Ruckelshaus refused, and was fired.
