Armin Laschet served as the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) from 2019 to 2021. He was elected leader of the CDU in December 2019, after the previous leader, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, resigned. Laschet was a candidate for the 2021 German federal election, but he was defeated by Olaf Scholz of the Social Democratic Party (SPD).
