Percival immersed himself into a military career during Interwar. He joined the British Army in 1904 and served in a number of campaigns, including the Second Boer War and World War I. He was appointed commander of the British forces in Malaya in 1936 and was responsible for the defence of Singapore against the Japanese invasion in 1942.
