In 1877, Asaph Hall III discovered the two moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos. Phobos is the larger of the two, with a diameter of about 17 miles (28 km). It orbits Mars in just over 7 hours. Deimos is smaller, with a diameter of about 12 miles (19 km). It orbits Mars in just over 30 hours. Both moons are thought to be captured asteroids.
