Asaph Hall III was born in Hartford, Connecticut, United States on August 3, 1829. He was an American astronomer and mathematician who is best known for his discovery of the moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos, in 1877. He was also the first person to measure the distance between the Earth and Mars.
