Aslan Maskhadov was the president of Chechnya from 1997 to 2005. He was killed in a Russian special forces operation on March 8, 2005. Maskhadov's death was a major blow to the Chechen separatist movement, and it led to the rise of more radical leaders such as Shamil Basayev.
