Assata Shakur, formerly known as JoAnne Deborah Byron, was born on July 16, 1947, in New York City. She was a prominent figure in the Black Power movement and a member of the Black Panther Party. Shakur was involved in several political activities and was later convicted of murder and attempted murder in the death of a New Jersey State Trooper.
