Athanasius of Alexandria was exiled five times during his episcopacy. He was first exiled in 335, when he was accused of heresy by the Arians. He was then exiled again in 339, 346, 356, and 362. Athanasius was a strong opponent of Arianism, and his exiles were largely due to his opposition to this heresy.
