Hugo Haase succeeded August Bebel as the chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in 1913. He was a strong advocate for peace and internationalism, and opposed the outbreak of World War I in 1914. Haase was expelled from the SPD in 1917 for his opposition to the war, and he subsequently joined the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany (USPD). He died in 1919.
