Augustine started his mission to Britain from Rome. He was sent by Pope Gregory I in 596 AD to convert the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. Augustine landed on the Isle of Thanet in 597 AD and was received by King Ethelbert of Kent. He was successful in converting Ethelbert and many of his people to Christianity.
