Dr. Ba Maw succeeded Aung San's position as head of state of Burma after his assassination in 1947. He was a leading figure in the Burmese independence movement and had served as Prime Minister of Burma from 1937 to 1939. After the Japanese invasion of Burma in 1942, he collaborated with the Japanese and served as President of the Provisional Government of Burma from 1943 to 1945.
