Australia joined the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in 2006. Prior to joining the AFC, Australia was a member of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC). The move to the AFC allowed Australia to compete in more competitive tournaments and improve their chances of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup.
