ʿAlí Muḥammad was the birth name of the Báb, a religious leader who founded the Bábí Faith in Iran in the 19th century. He was born in 1819 in Shiraz, Iran, and was raised as a Muslim. In 1844, he proclaimed himself to be the "Gate" to the Hidden Imam, the Mahdi, who was expected to return to Earth in Shia Islam.
