Bachir Gemayel led the Lebanese Forces, a Christian militia, during the Lebanese Civil War. The Lebanese Forces sought to protect the interests of the Christian community in Lebanon and were involved in numerous military conflicts with other factions during the war. Gemayel became president of Lebanon in 1982 but was assassinated shortly after taking office. His assassination triggered further violence and conflict in the country.
