Baybars succeeded Qutuz as Sultan of Egypt in 1260, after the latter's death in the Battle of Ain Jalut. Baybars was a Mamluk slave who rose through the ranks of the military to become a leading commander under Qutuz. After Qutuz's death, Baybars was elected as Sultan by the Mamluk military.
