Baybars was the Mamluk sultan of Egypt and Syria from 1260 to 1277. He was a leading figure in the Mamluk victory at the Battle of Ain Jalut in 1260, which ended the Mongol advance into the Middle East. Baybars also expanded the Mamluk sultanate by conquering territory in Anatolia and Palestine.
