Bamir Topi studied Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tirana, Albania. He received his doctorate in 1982 and worked as a veterinarian for several years before entering politics. In 1996, he was elected to the Albanian parliament and served as speaker of parliament from 2002 to 2007. In 2007, he was elected president of Albania and served in that role until 2012.
