Bảo Đại served as the Chief of State of the State of Vietnam from 1949 to 1955. The State of Vietnam was a French puppet state that was established after the French defeat in World War II. Bảo Đại was chosen by the French to be the Chief of State because he was seen as a compromise candidate who would be acceptable to both the French and the Vietnamese nationalists.
